Jessica Buettner has been a force to be reckoned with in the powerlifting world for the past few years. She has consistently been winning the Canadian Powerlifting Union (CPU) Nationals, and this year was no different. On February 13-18, Jessica competed in the 84-kilogram weight class at the 2023 CPU Powerlifting Championships in Richmond, Canada. Despite the fact that she had only recently moved up to this weight class, Jessica managed to set three new national records.
Starting off with the squat, Jessica Buettner lifted an impressive 209 kilograms (460.8-pound), setting her first of three national records. She followed this up with a 100-kilogram (220.5-pound) bench press. Moving on, Jessica then completed a 250-kilogram (551.2-pound) deadlift, breaking another national record with a massive pull. Jessica’s total of 559 kilograms (1,232.4 pounds) was her third and final new national record.
Despite her impressive performance, Jessica Buettner revealed that she was not going all out at this competition. The reason being that the SBD Sheffield – Classic Powerlifting competition was just four weeks away.
Jessica Buettner’s performance at the 2023 CPU Nationals was a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport. It has been an ongoing process for her to consistently push herself to the limit, and as a result, her achievements have been nothing short of remarkable. Her move up to the 84-kilogram weight class has definitely been a challenge, but she has risen to the occasion and looks to make history in this division very soon.
Jessica Buettner’s Full Performance
Squat: 209 kilograms (460.8 pounds) — Canadian Record
Bench Press: 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds)
Deadlift: 250 kilograms (551.2 pounds) — Canadian Record
Total: 559 kilograms (1,232.4 pounds) — Canadian Record
“Went 8/8 – scratched my last deadlift since we didn’t want to burn out but 250 moved the best I think it ever has. Qualified for worlds which was the goal.”
Jessica’s performance at the 2023 CPU Nationals has set the stage for her upcoming competition at the SBD Sheffield – Classic Powerlifting, which will take place on March 25-26 in the United Kingdom. She has already proven that she can compete at the highest level, and now she will have the opportunity to show the world what she is capable of. With her hard work and dedication, Jessica is sure to make a strong showing at the SBD Sheffield, alongside many other world-class athletes.
This was Jessica Buettner’s 21st sanctioned powerlifting appearance and her 17th career victory. Most importantly, it sets her on the right path to claiming another IPF World Championship title, as she has won the open-age division twice already. During that time, Jessica also set numerous World Records, with one still remaining in her possession. That is a 261.5-kilogram (576.5-pound) deadlift U76KG World Record, which she set at the 2022 IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships.

It is not clear if Jessica Buettner will remain in the 84-kilogram weight class from now on, or if she will come back down to the 76-kilogram weight class for the upcoming contest. Regardless, she will remain one of the greatest lifters in both weight classes. So, it just comes down to a matter of Jessica’s preference.
